Biography

Hi, I'm Beth. I was born in Cardiff and raised between Barry in South Wales and West Cork (where the photo on the left was taken). I am an applied linguist and teach English Linguistics at University College London, where I've worked since 2022.

I'm interested in how language 'rules' work in societies, and in particular how linguistic reform can make experiences of healthcare easier for people. In recent years, I've worked mostly on projects around reproductive and sexual health, and you can read more about this work if you click on 'Projects'.

Before joining UCL, I completed my PhD part-time at Lancaster University, and held Visiting Lectureships at Lancaster, the University of Manchester and Liverpool Hope University. Before that, I read for a BA in English Language and Literature at Mansfield College, Oxford - where I wrote my thesis on news media bias under the supervision of Professor Deborah Cameron - and an MSt in English Language.

When not in work I'm usually to be found in the company of my kids, cats, a good book, or happily immersed in very cold water.
